We’re back with another 32 Under 32 interview. This one is a bit different because we’re talking to a 2-time winner. Paulina Galoostian was honored last year and she’s won again this year for an entirely different reason. Give it a read and we’ll have another one for you tomorrow.
Congrats on being chosen as one of the top 32 advertising and marketing professionals under 32. We selected people who really go above and beyond in their work. How do you think you approach your job differently than other people?
I started building ThisWon my Senior year while at the University of San Francisco. I used the resources that San Francisco has to offer to put together our team and get feedback from others. Once my Co-Founder, Jose Alvarado, and I joined forces, we were able to bring our idea to life. ThisWon is a social decision making platform. ThisWon helps you get feedback and voice your thoughts by having friends, experts & the community vote on posts. Friends & experts can finally help you decide which shoes to buy, which restaurant to try, and everything else you’re stuck on. Our platform is solving everyday problems for a generation that has too many options.
What kind of accounts/projects are you working on these days?
My main focus right now is ThisWon. I’m working on growing the community and iterating on the product. ThisWon helps brands get direct feedback in a timely, efficient & fun experience. ThisWon eliminates the need of surveys, focus groups, polling services and other costly testing methods. My goal right now is to grow the community & onboard brands to give them the data they need to make their consumers happier. We have successfully introduced influencers from California, New York and London to ThisWon. Each influencer was surprised to see the feedback they received from our community. I’m working on bringing more of these influencers on a weekly basis, so they create the content our users are craving.
What is it about where you currently work that really pushes you to be better?
Since the launch of ThisWon, we have seen the community grow and product evolve. As the Founder, I want to make sure that each user experience is the best that it can be. Seeing users consistently come back to the app, share the platform with their friends and post on a regular basis feeds my inspiration and pushes me. My favorite part of the week is reaching out to our users and getting their feedback on how we can make our community and product stronger. I also am driven & pushed by my team, there is nothing better than working with talented people towards a shared goal. Working with people who share the same vision with new perspectives and have the passion to create a tool that can benefit so many people encourages me to take responsibility as a leader.
In thinking over your career so far, what work had made you the proudest?
Seeing people actually use ThisWon, give us positive feedback and come back day after day has made me the proudest so far.
Founding a company is never easy. Tell us some things you’ve learned from starting up your new business.
The process of finding the right Co-Founder that shares your vision is very important! We have learned that as a duo, communication and determination are key to survival. In the beginning it felt like when one bug was fixed, two new bugs popped up! Once our prototype was live, I had to learn a lot about user behavior. To create a product users love, you have to actually listen to your users, see what they want and build it around them. Ripping out some features from the app was tough, but they were things that our users didn’t need. It’s important to focus on your core product and objective – focus on the problem you’re solving. Now, we are prioritizing, simplifying and making a better experience for our community.
Here’s a ridiculously clichéd interview question for you: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I was actually asked this question by the SF Egotist when I was 19 years old and my answer was “So in 10 years I’ll be 29, wow! By then I hope to have my own company.” I’m happy to say, I’ve built my first company already. I don’t know where I’ll be ten years from now, but I hope the ThisWon community continues to grow! I want ThisWon to be a fun, easy tool that brands and consumers take advantage of on a regular basis. I would also love to continue building with Jose, we always have great ideas. I hope to learn from more people in our industry, whether it means working for them or being mentored. I’ve considered going back to work for a company where I can learn from more experienced Founders, Product Managers and UX Designers.
This might be tough, but here’s your chance to give a shout out to one person who has helped you get to where you are today. Go.
Of course, shout out to my awesome co-founder Jose Alvarado. May we continue to build together, learn from each other and succeed! I’d also like to thank my mom, who may not fully understand the entrepreneurial journey, but loves, supports & empowers me no matter what!
