Description

Do you want to work with a group of people striving to create a wiser and kinder world? We value being of service, exceptional teamwork, authentic connection, being direct and kind and honoring human dignity while having a commitment to growth and transformation. Sounds True, founded in 1985, is a multimedia publisher specializing in spirituality, holistic living, and transformational learning. We are seeking a full-time B2B Copywriter to join our team.

They will have the ability to change the world with their stories. As a marketing professional, they maneuver economic pathways that make their words powerful and far-reaching. We are searching for someone who wants to apply these skills—and their authentic selves—to a greater good, who wants to join us on a shared journey of transformation and healing.

Sounds True seeks a copywriter to create top-level advertising copy for our business-to-business channels, focused primarily on the books we publish. Creative duties include copy for seasonal trade frontlists, direct-to-consumer book jackets and physical products, online retailer product pages, print ads, funnel pages, email, social media, and a variety of other marketing initiatives. Our copywriters are expected to display a mastery of our brand guidelines, the Sounds True voice in its many permutations, our authors and their teachings, and our audience’s needs, expectations, and experiences.

Responsibilities:

Writing: Create original copy for all of Sounds True’s B2B channels that meets our high standards of quality, timeliness, persuasiveness, and brand integrity.
Brand Representation: Understand and represent the brand voice of Sounds True in every audience-facing communication—including the effects of marketing choices such as pricing, use of imagery, strategic framing of offers, and other factors.
Team Player: Collaborate within the team and with other departments through clear communication, respect, and kindness.
Content Knowledge: Demonstrate a broad mastery of Sounds True content, product lines, and the teachings of our authors.
Accuracy: Work closely with the proofreading department to maintain brand voice standards and to establish and update house style for copy.
Training: Stay informed of current trends and research on marketing writing and direct marketing, especially as it pertains to publishing and the spirituality/self-help marketplace.
Autonomy: Proactive and self-editing/improving in order to regularly generate top-flight copy without regularly requiring significant internal revisions or rewrites.
Mentoring: Foundational skills and experience collaborating with and mentoring writers from adjacent fields, i.e., editors, with regard to marketing.
Customer Sensitivity: Always be able to assume a customer-centric focus for how our written copy and marketing initiatives will be received in the world. The writer must be aware of the tension around “selling the dharma” and be able to handle spiritual topics with authenticity and respect.

Unique Responsibilities:
Mission Affinity: Our Copywriters are dedicated to the core Sounds True mission of disseminating spiritual wisdom. A strong interest in or personal experience with at least one form of spiritual practice is considered a valuable component for long-term success.
Title Generation: Assist with generation of titles and subtitles for Sounds True books, programs, and other initiatives.
Author Sensitivity: Sounds True authors are involved with the marketing process to a far greater extent than in other publishing companies. Copywriters must be able to handle author interactions with respect, delicacy, and diplomacy while being steadfast with author changes that might impair the success of a product.
Direct Marketing Knowledge: Our Copywriters are expected to have a broad knowledge of direct marketing strategies and executions. Specific experience of marketing within publishing and book distribution platforms (Amazon Premium A+ marketing, etc.) is a big plus.
Brand Stewardship: The Sounds True Copywriter must always be aware of the complex needs of our brand and audience, and must be empowered to advocate for brand integrity—even when our voice may be contrary to standard marketing practice. This is especially essential with freelancers and new employees not familiar with our exacting standards.
Content Creation: The Copywriter is sometimes asked to create original material not associated with direct marketing. Examples include the foreword for a book; personal letters or emails from authors; non-marketing social and blog posts; content for the interior of a book in the author’s voice; lead magnets (e.g., white paper articles, self-assessment quizzes) for online marketing campaigns, etc.

Recommended Skills/Qualifications/Job Requirements:

Education: Recommended BA or BS college degree, though other writing background is acceptable.
Specialized knowledge: Personal experience of spiritual practice(s) is helpful. Interest or willingness to learn is a must.
Skills: Writing. We do not look for a specific sort of writing background, though of course marketing/sales writing is a great plus. We do need to see a strong affinity and skill with language.
Abilities: The power to “channel” the voice of other writers is an essential ability—we are required to ghost-write material from authors, endorsers, and Sounds True personnel.
Personal characteristics: Ability to receive and learn from critique; being a team player; independence and self-discipline; willingness to actively participate in Sounds True’s unique culture; passion for words and a deep interest in persuasive, high-integrity marketing
Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience as a professional copywriter, preferably in the field of publishing and/or marketing. Experience working within a marketing or publishing organization preferred. We will consider other relevant experiences as appropriate.
