BLACK LIVES MATTER IS NOT A DESIGN SPRINT

Juneteenth, 12 noon

Firebrand founder Schessa Garbutt, author of viral essay “Black Lives Matter is Not a Design Challenge,” will be expanding on that text and discussing what allyship looks like for professional designers as we move away from performative, one-time actions and into life-long unlearning.

Schessa (she/they) is the founder and creative force behind Firebrand. She has worked in tech and at agencies large and small for brands such as Netflix, Starbucks, the Oprah Winfrey Network, and UCLA.

Moonlighting as a freelance designer for small businesses and start-ups, Schessa was continuously drawn to the passion of founders and entrepreneurs working to better their respective industries. She realized that when we each commit ourselves to making our corner of the world more just and more green, we trend toward a brighter future. All of these experiences sparked Firebrand, a studio committed to doing better.

BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER WHEN THEY ARE NOT

June 15, 2pm

Design isn’t just a profession, it’s a responsibility. With the right tools, we can design solutions for anything, including problems that may arise with cohabitation, in both digital and physical realms. We have the capacity to foster understanding when we design for constraint, emotion, safety, and inclusivity.

Hosted by award-winning game designer and producer Robin Hunicke (Journey, MySims, Luna, Wattam) and Roblox Senior Director of Product and Design Morgan Tucker, this fireside chat will dive into the philosophical perspective and approaches taken when designing experiences that lead the way for a new generation of digital citizens and creators.

SPOTLIGHT WITH ZAHID SARDAR – GARY HUTTON

June 15th, 10am PST

Gary Hutton is a son of California, formally trained in studio arts and interior design. His small, artful practice creates relevant, trend-setting interiors coveted by tastemakers in many fields and by clients in search of curated living. Hutton’s practice has rare experience in evolving shelter challenges like advanced technology, entertainment and security systems. Concurrently, his studio has high-level expertise in sustainability standards and design for off-the-grid living.

Spotlight With Zahid Sardar is a dynamic, fun and informal virtual forum, hosted by acclaimed design editor Zahid Sardar in partnership with Social Blueprint.

IMAGINATION SPACE

VIRTUAL EXPERIENCE BY ROBLOX

This virtual environment is a destination where attendees can come together, celebrate and discuss the newest work, ideas, and people that make SFDW so special.

OUR NEW CULTURE OF SHARING AND NETWORKING

BRAINDATE SESSIONS
June 16th, 18th and 23rd

ACTION: To participate, you’ll need to set up your profile ahead of scheduled session dates.

SF Design Week is partnering with e180 to host virtual braindates which are knowledge-sharing conversations that you book with others to have a one-on-one (or in small groups), on the Braindate. platform. Since we’re all stuck at home during SIP, it’s the best way to connect with, learn from, and have terrific conversations with new people—all virtually.

  • SET UP YOUR BRAINDATE PROFILE: Once you are registered for SFDW and are ready to set up your Braindate Profile, login here: https://sfdesignweek.braindate.com/ using the email you used to register for SFDW. You will be prompted to create a password. Once you’re in you’ll see the topic market, where SFDW attendees post topics for one-on-one or small group discussions.
  • POST A TOPIC: Select “New topic” in the navigation bar and post a topic of your own.
  • JOIN AN EXISTING TOPIC: Book a spot in a conversation posted by one of your peers.

Your braindates will occur via video on the Braindate platform during SFDW at the time of your choosing on the 16th, 18th or 23rd. If you posted a one-on-one people will propose times to you that you can accept or decline. If you posted a group (which I personally recommend) you set the time that suits you best.

This short video explains how all of this works step-by-step
